About The Studio

Sawdust Studios, the only community woodworking shop in the Columbia area, offers classes, memberships, apprenticeship, or one-on-one instruction. The 4,500-square-foot facility has professional grade power tools, hand tools, and other necessities to offer members. Both a woodshop and educational cooperative, everyone is welcome, regardless of their experience in woodworking.

“My vision for Sawdust is to provide beginners the opportunity to learn woodworking and experienced woodworkers the space and tools to practice their craft.”

— Cruz Chavez

Welcome to Sawdust Studios! My name is Cruz Chavez, and I came up with the idea of Sawdust because of my love for woodworking. Before opening Sawdust Studios, I owned my own construction company. I loved the idea of being able to create and see projects come to fruition. Although, I enjoyed construction, it is not where my passion lied. I wanted to grow a woodworking community that provided others the opportunity to learn. This is the reason I created Sawdust Studios. Sawdust Studios allows me to make my dream a reality and provide an inviting space for others to join me along the way.

So, you may still be asking, what is Sawdust Studios really about? Sawdust Studios is a 24/7 woodworking gym. It really is open 24/7. You can come and go as you please. After you sign up, take a safety class, and pass our safety quiz, you will receive full access — and the shop is yours.

Why did we make this our structure? Because we believe that creativity flows at all times of the day/night and what better time to act on our ideas than the moment they come to mind. We want our members to feel that they can create and learn whenever it is convenient for them. We also understand that not everyone's schedule is the same.
